Big Data Analytics: From Hardware To Application

Abstract: Big Data Analytics is about efficiently extracting knowledge from data. It has a wide range of applications in exploratory analysis applications. In this talk, I will introduce a multi-layer big data processing and analytical architecture and the research works have done in my group at first, then I will present my recent research work in this area, namely, top-k insights extraction, which published in SIGMOD’2017. The background of top-k insight extraction problem is given below.
OLAP tools have been extensively used by enterprises to make better and faster decisions. Nevertheless, they require users to specify group-by attributes and know precisely what they are looking for. Our top-k insights extraction problem takes the first attempt towards automatically extracting top-k insights from multi-dimensional data from data warehouses. This is useful not only for non-expert users, but also reduces the manual effort of data analysts.
Biography: Bo Tang is currently an assistant professor at Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology, China. He is leading the Database Research Group. His main research interests are in the area of data management and analysis, i.e., similarity search on high dimensional data, data exploration techniques on multidimensional dataset. His research works published on top-tier database conferences and journals (e.g., SIGMOD, PVLDB, ICDE, EDBT, TKDE, etc.).
